Wilson County Friends of NRA held a packing event called “FNRA Cares” in November to send needed supplies to troops stationed in Afghanistan.
As part of the project, Wilson County FNRA asked Winfree Bryant Middle School students to get involved.
The students did, providing some supplies and a bag of handwritten cards and letters for soldiers. Just before Christmas, troops received 15 boxes containing toiletries, magazines, socks and heartfelt Christmas cards written by Winfree Bryant Middle School students.
Of course, the personal items were appreciated, but the cards were the biggest hit.
Bill and Becky Slocum are Wilson County FNRA committee members, and Bill Slocum is also a civilian contractor stationed in Afghanistan. Bill Slocum distributed the FNRA Cares packages to troops. While home for a visit in March, Slocum shared the reaction of soldiers receiving the cards.
“Reactions ranged from happy surprise to near tears from some soldiers who don’t receive many letters from home,” he said.
Troops wanted to show their appreciation, so on Tuesday the Slocums presented Becky Kegley, principal at Winfree Bryant Middle School, a custom framed commemorative certificate and flag flown over Afghanistan.
“We hoped to leave the school and the students with a physical reminder that kind words and actions are treasured and have made troops feel a little less far from home,” Bill Slocum said.
FNRA Cares team plans to hold future FNRA Cares packing events at Wilson County Friends of NRA.
