Thumbs up to Wilson County Relay for Life, which is scheduled for June 9 from 6 p.m. until midnight on the west lawn of Wilson Bank & Trust. The theme for the event will be “Wish Upon a Cure.” The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community. Rallying the passion of 4 million people worldwide, Relay for Life events raise critical funds that help fuel the mission of the American Cancer Society. The ACS is an organization that’s reach touches many lives – those who are currently battling cancer, those who may face a diagnosis in the future and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether thanks to education regarding prevention and early detection. In addition to assisting Wilson County cancer patients with services like free housing, networking with other survivors and informational support, the American Cancer Society currently has $8.5 million in cancer research projects in Tennessee.
Thumbs up to the Kiwanis Club of Lebanon, which received the Kiwanis Distinguished Club award for 2016 during its weekly meeting Monday. Kiwanis District II Lt. Gov. Curtis Shinsky visited the group to present the award to past-president Medana Hemontolor and past-secretary Eddie Pawlawski. The club met the criteria based on increased membership, support of local children’s initiatives and other required achievements. The club meets weekly at Sammy B’s at noon. Thumbs up to members of the Lebanon Noon Rotary Club who donated dozens of backpacks to the Keith Edmonds Foundation on Tuesday afternoon. The club collected backpacks throughout February as its monthly service project. Club president Michael Ayalon presented the backpacks to Edmonds during Tuesday’s Rotary meeting. The donated backpacks will be used for the foundation’s Backpacks of Love program, in which backpacks are filled with essential necessities and given to children of all ages who are victims of child abuse. Each backpack is gender and age specific and includes items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, soap/body wash, shampoo and age-appropriate books and toys.
