Making the Most of Home: March Madness hits at Applebee’s

If you are somewhat familiar with coupons, no doubt you have heard the concept of competitor coupons. In short, competitor coupons refer to a retailer or establishment accepting another store’s coupon to discount their own items.

Stores do this for one specific reason – to gain your business as opposed to the competitor. In general, most stores have guidelines when it comes to accepting these competitor coupons. For example, distance of the competitor from their own store and similarity of the store – grocery, pharmacy, department, etc. – are considered.

Never have we seen a coupon craze like the one many Applebee’s restaurants are bringing to the table. Competitor coupon craze would definitely be a wise choice of words for what Applebee’s is doing. Applebee’s is stepping up the game by accepting any coupon toward your meal. Yes, that’s right, any coupon – expired, department store, pharmacy, even grocery store. Keep in mind every Applebee’s is not the same, so before you start paying, see if they are playing.

Of course, there are some restrictions to all of this March Madness coupon craze. Discounts will only be honored up to 50 percent off of your purchase. However, it applies to gift certificates, gift cards and all paper coupons from competitors. One exception is the digital frenzy that has quickly increased in the past few years. Digital coupons or smartphone coupons are not included in the deal.

So the question is, how many will really take advantage of this crazy month of March Madness? Ladies, this might be the perfect time to grab your guy and talk him out of a great dinner at a great discount. What about the family? Grab the children for a night out that you can actually afford to feed them something other than McDonald’s for a change; a healthy meal at a not-so-hefty price make for great times.

Will this make an impact on the coupon market? No doubt other restaurants will be paying attention to Applebee’s lead to see if success follows. This might just be the beginning to a new way to save and another unique marketing tactic that benefits both the retailer or establishment and the consumer. Here’s to happy eating and cashing in your $5 off shoes coupon on your shrimp dinner. March on in to crazy competitor couponing this month and dine for a discount.
