Charity scavenger hunt to fund research for rare disease

Annabel’s Hunt for Hope will be Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at the Rockstar Academy of Dance.

The event is a community-wide scavenger hunt to raise money to fund research for Tay-Sachs disease.

All of the money raised at the event will go to the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research to develop treatments and cures.

Annabel Joy Pounds died a year ago from Tay-Sachs disease at 3 years old. Those with the disease are born without an enzyme in the brain, which causes waste to build up and affect the person’s motor skills.

In Annabel’s case, it took 6 months before she even showed symptoms of having the disease. Annabel’s mom, Casey Pounds, started the scavenger hunt event as a way to raise money to research the disease.

“There is currently no treatment or cure for the disease,” said Pounds. “All the money from this event will go to the NTASD to their research fund. They’re getting very close to a cure; it just takes funding to get to the next stage.”

The scavenger hunt will begin at the Rockstar Academy of Dance at 1 p.m. From there, teams of four will go out into Mt. Juliet to find items needed to win.

Tickets to participate in the event cost $20 per person or $60 per four-person team.

There will be prizes awarded to the winning teams, including Tennessee Titans tickets, a professional photography session, an Amazon Echo and more.
