Novamet Specialty Products Corp. officials announced Tuesday the company’s new home will be in Lebanon at the former Toshiba plant.
Novamet Specialty Products produces more than 60 different products, including tightly sized nickel powder, metallic flake, coated materials and specialty nickel oxides. Novamet plans to relocate its headquarters, primary office and manufacturing facility from Wyckoff, N.J. to the Lebanon Industrial Center.
The former Toshiba plant sits on 97 acres of land and is about 500,000 square feet. Novamet will have 350,000 square feet available for further development.
The company’s relocation to Wilson County represents an investment of $8.6 million and will create 43 new jobs over the next four years, according to Tennessee Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty.
“When a global company like Novamet chooses Tennessee as its home base, it underscores the unique advantages that help our state stand at the forefront amongst competitors around the world,” Hagerty said. “Novamet is sure to be a terrific addition to the corporate landscape of Wilson County. I appreciate the company’s decision to locate here and welcome them to our great state.”
This marks the second company to move into the space and would fill all of the remaining property space left after Toshiba exited in September 2007.
Toshiba, an electronics corporation, located to Lebanon in 1977 and continued to grow its facility from 148,000 square feet to 1 million square feet while there.
Local economic officials previously disguised negotiations with Novamet as Project Plato to keep plans confidential.
Novamet products are used in a variety of industries and applications. Metallic flake pigments of nickel, zinc and stainless steel are supplied for decorative, conductive and corrosion-resistant coating applications. Nickel coated graphite is used by conductive gasket producers for shielding applications. Tightly sized spherical nickel powders are widely used in the electronics and metal injection molding industries. Meanwhile, specialty nickel oxides find important applications in the automotive catalyst and fuel cell markets.
“The people of Novamet are excited about relocating to Tennessee and being a part of the thriving, yet comfortable, community in Lebanon and participating in the bright future we believe lies in store for it,” Novamet CEO Jeff Peterson said. “We are proud to bring a number of highly skilled workers from New Jersey and jump start our transition here in this wonderful community. We are grateful to the leaders here in Lebanon, Wilson County and the state of Tennessee for facilitating our transition in multiple ways.”
The company bought the former Toshiba manufacturing facility in the Lebanon Industrial Center and plans to develop the site into a center of manufacturing businesses.
“Novamet is an example of a company looking for a new home and discovering Lebanon as a place which meets their needs and insures a prosperous future,” Lebanon Mayor Philip Craighead said. “We are excited about the renovation of an older manufacturing facility and being able to see new life being breathed into this location as well as our community. We welcome Novamet’s team to Lebanon and look forward to our future partnerships.”
With distribution centers in North America, Asia, Europe and Australia, the company specializes in custom designed products for myriad applications.
“It’s always great to have a company like Novamet locate in our area,” Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto said. “We have a very capable workforce here in Wilson County and are fortunate to have these quality jobs available to us.”
Currently, Novamet’s highly refined materials are used in the production of fuel cells, catalytic converters for engines to reduce pollution, batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles, electronic insulating materials for cell phones and cell towers, as well as in various other applications requiring the specific morphological and/or chemical properties sought by highly advanced manufacturers.
“We are excited to bring another corporate headquarters and manufacturer to Lebanon and Wilson County,” said G.C. Hixson, executive director of the Joint Economic and Community Development Board of Wilson County. “This project was made possible through the continual support of the Wilson County Commission through their incentive partnerships and the leadership of the JECDB. The former Toshiba facility now identified as the Lebanon Industrial Center will continue to bring additional jobs and investments to the community. We would like to thank Mr. Jeff Peterson for their commitment and vote of confidence in our community.”
Novamet also repackages Vale Inco nickel powders to both Novamet standard and customer specific containers and weights requirements.
“TVA congratulates Novamet Specialty Products officials on their decision to locate a production facility in Lebanon and create new investments and jobs for the Wilson County community,” said John Bradley, TVA senior vice president of economic development. “TVA and Middle Tennessee Electric appreciate the opportunity to work with the state of Tennessee, city and county leaders to help recruit Novamet and support their continued success.”
